ALVA ELAINE MUTCH (nee WILSON) January 3, 1925 - February 19, 2014 Peacefully in her sleep, Alva Mutch passed away. Her daughter and granddaughter were by her side as she took her last breath. Alva was predeceased by her husband Jack, brother Garth, sister Tuffy and son-in-law Ed. She is survived by her daughter Shelley, granddaughter Mindy (J.J.); son Grant (Tonie), grandsons Bond and Jacob; brother Keith and sister Arlie. Alva was born in Sperling, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg at the age of 17 to attend Business College and after graduation she worked as a secretary. She met her husband Jack 10 years later. They were married in a year and together they raised two children. Her life was drastically changed when her husband passed away at the age of 52. Though she grieved she still had a teenage son to support. She went back to school to become a legal secretary, and throughout her life she showed everybody that she was a strong, tough and independent woman. She sometimes said that her only regret was that she wasn't able to pursue more education. She was incredibly intelligent and could have done just about anything. In 1987 her son moved to Australia, which was hard on her, but enabled her to travel overseas quite often for visits. Family was everything to Alva. She moved in with her daughter's family in 2002 and lived in that house the rest of her life. Alva loved sports and was a hard-core baseball fan. More specifically, a Yankees fan. She watched every game and kept scrapbooks with articles and box scores. Right until her last few weeks she was the picture of health, never needing any support walking or suffering from any illness. During her short stay at Victoria Hospital, 4 South we were grateful for the care and compassion she received from the doctors, nurses and staff. She was the sweetest, most loving, generous person, always thinking of others before herself. She really felt loved and cared for in her daughter's home and when her son-in-law passed away two years ago she flew all the way home from Australia to support her family. Her loss will leave a huge, gaping hole in our home and in our hearts. The world has lost an amazing, rare, beautiful human being and everyone who knew her will miss her always and forever. Alva requested no formal funeral. A memorial gathering will be held at her home Sunday afternoon.
